Het nieuwe faculteitsgebouw voor het biomedisch cluster van de Universiteit Utrecht is onderdeel van het masterplan voor het gehele Universiteitsterrein, opgesteld door O.M.A. in 1995. Voor deze locatie zocht de universiteit naar een ingetogen en duurzaam gebouw waarbij optimaal gebruik zou worden gemaakt van het diepe, op het zuiden gerichte, beschikbare kavel. Het nieuwe faculteitsgebouw vormt de hoek van het bestaande Academisch ziekenhuis van Utrecht en versterkt daarmee het ingangsgebied van het ziekenhuis. Tegelijkertijd heeft het gebouw een eigen identiteit binnen dit complex en positioneert het zich als een zelfstandig gebouw op het Universiteitsterrein. Het gebouw met een bruto vloeroppervlakte van 14.500 m2 bestaat uit drie delen; kantoren, leslokalen met individuele werkplekken (studielandschap) en een restaurant op de begane grond. De opzet is flexibel en kent een werkomgeving waar verschillende lesmethodes kunnen plaatsvinden zoals klassikaal onderwijs, projectgroepen en individuele studie. In het hart van het gebouw zijn drie glazen lichtkokers uitgespaard, waardoor indirect zonlicht diep het gebouw kan binnendringen. De kegels verbinden de publieke ruimtes met de bovenliggende onderwijsverdiepingen en zijn zichtbaar vanuit het hele gebouw. Ze doen dienst als ventilatieschachten en maken tegelijkertijd onderdeel uit van de draagconstructie.

ABC Faculty Building – Utrecht, Netherlands
The new faculty building for the Academic Biomedical Cluster (ABC) at Utrecht University responds to a 1995 master plan by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The University sought a modest, intelligent and sustainable building to make optimal use of a deep, south-facing site.
The new building forms the corner of the existing academic hospital. The building successfully strengthens the existing entrance of the hospital and establishes an independent identity within the complex and the campus. It has three parts: offices, classrooms with individual workspaces (study landscapes) and a canteen. In both the office and education areas, flexible environments provide for different teaching scenarios including traditional lectures, group work and individual research. Three conical glass voids positioned in the centre of the building allow light deep into the building and connect the more public areas with the education floors. The cones integrate the load bearing structure and serve as ventilation shafts. Visible from all parts of the building, these crystal glass shapes function both as the technical backbone and the atmospheric heart of the building. Combining a rationalized and orthogonal structure with specific shapes and open areas, the design results in a modest, yet enriched environment with an inspiring identity.
